Perhaps the most helpful characteristic of FRAXEL^TM is that it can be used not only on the face, but also on the neck, chest and hands. Due to the paucity of sweat glands to provide healing, the neck chest and hands have been too risky to treat with other lasers or deep chemical peels. FRAXEL^TM fills that void. 

We consider this to be a major breakthrough for successful results in the chest and neck areas. One of the advantages of FRAXEL^TM is that it may be combined with other office procedures at a later date.

What can the patient expect on the day of the FRAXEL^TM treatment? 

A time commitment of two to three hours is needed, depending on which areas are being treated. 

The first step is to prepare the areas to be treated and to apply a topical numbing product (Lidocaine with or without Tetracaine ointment). This step may be administered by the aesthetician, which presents her a wonderful opportunity to interface with the patient. Numbing may include a light sedative if needed. This step takes approximately an hour. 

Next, blue dye is applied and an additional layer of Lidocaine. With the topical anesthetic in effect, the patient experiences only mild stinging during the approximately 30 minute treatment.

It is important to note that a patient will leave with a residue of blue dye on the treated area. This may last for up to three days. 

The patient typically experiences a "sunburn like" appearance. Mild swelling lasts 2-5 days, during which time the skin feels slightly rough and scaly. Patients are instructed to use gentle cleansers, mild moisturizers and zinc sunscreens during the next five days.

With FRAXEL^TM, the re-epithelization occurs within 48 hours. Patients can see positive results after just one treatment. However, since FRAXEL^TM affects only 20% of the skin surface during each treatment, the patient will usually need to undergo the procedure 3-5 times at 2-4 week intervals to get the full benefit.

FRAXEL^TM is an exciting and successful treatment for many of our patients. It produces results which are satisfactory for both patient and practice. It bridges the gap between less aggressive treatments and surgical procedures.
