FraxelTM in Skin Care

Back

An impressive new laser technology has been developed to achieve mild resurfacing with fewer side effects.  Fractional Photothermolysis (FraxelTM) works by delivering separate, spaced cores of skin coagulation (Microthermal Zones or MTZs). Normal tissue is preserved between the cores, allowing rapid re-epithelialization and maintaining normal skin appearance.

FraxelTM addresses fine and medium depth wrinkles, uneven skin tones, and overall skin texture. Discoloration in skin tone such as melasma, brown spots and poikiloderma (blushing of the neck skin) may be dramatically improved with FraxelTM. Pore size, acne scarring and sebaceous hyperplasia may also be improved.

Perhaps the most helpful characteristic of FraxelTM is that it can be used not only on the face, but also on the neck, chest and hands. Due to the paucity of sweat glands to provide healing, the neck chest and hands have been too risky to treat with other lasers or deep chemical peels. FraxelTM fills that void. We consider this to be a major breakthrough for successful results in the chest and neck areas. One of the advantages of FraxelTM is that it may be combined with other office procedures at a later date.

The patient typically experiences a "sunburn-like" appearance. Mild swelling lasts 2-5 days, during whjch time the skin feels slightly rough and scaly. Patients can see positive results after one treatment. However, since FraxelTM affects only 20% of the skin surface during each treatment, the patient will usually need to undergo the procedure 3 to 5 times at two to four week intervals to get the full benefit.

FraxelTM is an exciting and successful treatment for many of our patients. It bridges the gap between less aggressive treatments and surgical procedures.
